Can ChatGPT make videos?
Last updated 2026-10-20
The short answer
Not with Sora any more. OpenAI's help center says the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026, and gives September 24, 2026 for the Sora API. ChatGPT still creates and edits images, and it can write a script or a shot list. The finished video still needs an editor, and Woven Video is a Mac editor where you can cut the clips you film or make elsewhere.
Your real routes
OpenAI's own video tools. Sora was OpenAI's video product. Its help center page says the web and app experiences ended on April 26, 2026, and gives September 24, 2026 as the end date for the Sora API. If you made clips there, the same page explains how to export them, and says OpenAI will email you before a final export window if it offers one. OpenAI's help page on images in ChatGPT covers images only.
Script with ChatGPT, then film it yourself. Ask for a hook, a script and a numbered shot list, then shoot the shots on your phone or camera. This gives you real footage of you, your product or your place, which no prompt can supply.
Make the shots elsewhere, then edit them. OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers and can make a picture in any aspect ratio, so you can ask for the vertical or horizontal shape your video needs. Video clips come from other tools. Either way you end up with loose files, and a video still needs cuts, captions, music and order.
Connect ChatGPT's Work mode to an editor. Woven Video lets ChatGPT's Work mode drive it from your Mac: ChatGPT asks for the edit and Woven makes it. That's below.
Edit the clips you make or film in Woven Video
Woven Video is a Mac editor with an AI agent and a multi-track timeline. Bring in clips you filmed or made elsewhere, ask for the edit in chat, and fix anything by hand. Sign in with a paid ChatGPT plan (Plus, Pro, Business, Edu or Enterprise) and the editor's chat runs on it, or connect ChatGPT's Work mode and let it ask for the edit.
- Bring in what you have. Video as MP4, MOV, M4V or WebM, images as PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF, and audio as MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC or FLAC. Drag files in from Finder.
- Fill the gaps. If a shot doesn't exist, request an image, a video clip or music in chat, and the file is added to your workspace. Generation uses Woven credits, even when chat runs on your ChatGPT plan.
- Caption it. Captions come from your speech, come in five looks, and are burned into the exported MP4.
- Connect Work mode. In Settings, open AI apps, pick Codex (ChatGPT), click Copy setup prompt and paste it into Work mode on your Mac. Woven does the editing and rendering.
- Keep control. Everything sits on a timeline with Picture, Text, Effects, Captions, Audio and SFX tracks, so you can trim, move or restyle by hand.
Good to know. Woven has no stock footage library and doesn't post to social platforms for you. Your clips come from your own files or from generation in Woven.
From idea to finished video
- 1Plan. Ask ChatGPT for a script and a shot list for the video.
- 2Collect. Film the shots, or make images and clips elsewhere or in Woven by chat.
- 3Edit. Drag the files onto a Woven reel's timeline and ask for the cut, for example: "Use the best take of each line, add captions, and finish on the product shot."
- 4Finish. Fix any cut or caption on the timeline, then export an MP4.
You need macOS 15 or later and a signed-in Woven account on a plan or the 3-day free trial. Without a paid ChatGPT plan, chat can run on Woven-hosted models on credits.
FAQ
Not through Sora, which OpenAI has discontinued. OpenAI's help page on images in ChatGPT covers creating and editing images, and it describes no video tool. For a video, write the script in ChatGPT and make the footage another way.
Not the app or the website. OpenAI's help center says those experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026, and gives September 24, 2026 as the end date for the Sora API. The same page covers exporting what you made and where to ask about refunds.
Yes, as text. Tell it the platform, the length and the point of the video, and ask for a hook, a script and a numbered shot list. It can't film the shots or cut them.
Yes, with limits. OpenAI's Image Inputs FAQ says video files can be attached, including on Free plans, but that the analysis can be incomplete: it may not analyze the entire video or interpret its audio accurately. For a closer look, send stills and a transcript. Woven Video can give a connected app up to six stills of a clip per request plus a transcript with word timings, but never motion or sound.
Yes. OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers and can follow a prompt for any aspect ratio, so ask for 9:16 if the video is vertical. Woven imports PNG, JPG, WebP and GIF images, but not HEIC.
Not by itself. You need an editor. With Woven Video, ChatGPT's Work mode can ask for the edit and Woven makes it on a real timeline. Our page on ChatGPT editing covers the details.
