Can Codex edit videos?
Last updated 2026-10-20
The short answer
Yes, if you connect it to an AI-native video editor like Woven Video. On its own, Codex can run FFmpeg on your computer to cut and join files, or build a video from code with Remotion, but it has no timeline: you can't see your clips laid out, preview your footage, or watch the edit come together. Paste Woven's setup prompt into Codex on your Mac once, in the Codex CLI, the Codex IDE extension, or Codex or Work mode in the ChatGPT desktop app, and Codex makes the edit on a timeline you can see and play back. Woven is the best fit for editing your own footage from Codex on a Mac: it finds the best moments in a long recording, removes silences and filler words, reframes to vertical and generates missing shots. The connector runs on your Mac, so it doesn't work from ChatGPT on the web or from Codex cloud tasks.
Your options
Codex on its own. The Codex CLI runs on your computer and can run tools you already have installed, with your approval. With FFmpeg installed, it can cut, join and convert video files from the command line. There's no timeline or preview, so you check each change by playing the file and fix it by asking again. OpenAI's docs cover image input, such as PNG and JPEG files, and say nothing about video input.
Build the video from code. Remotion makes videos from React code, and Remotion says its agent skills work with Codex. It suits promos and motion graphics built from scratch.
Plugins and connected editors. Several editors let Codex drive them, through a plugin or an MCP server (see the table below). You usually finish the edit inside that editor. OpenAI's docs say plugins work in the ChatGPT desktop app and the Codex CLI, but not in the Codex IDE extension.
An editor on your Mac with a timeline. That's Woven Video, below.
Video editors that work with Codex
Pick Woven Video if you want Codex to edit your own footage on a timeline you can see and fix by hand on a Mac. Pick Daydream if you need Windows, or Shotstack if you are a developer rendering from JSON in the cloud. Woven Video makes this site. Checked October 28, 2026, from each vendor's own pages. Each app below says Codex can drive it.
| App | What it does from Codex | How it connects | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Woven Video | Edits your own footage on a multi-track timeline you can see and play back: finds the strongest moments in a long recording and cuts each into a captioned clip, removes silences and filler words, reframes landscape to vertical, adds captions in five styles, effects, transitions and music, generates missing shots, music and voiceover, and exports an MP4 | Local MCP server, set up by pasting one prompt into Codex on your Mac, including the IDE extension. The same editor also works from Claude Code and its own chat. | Mac only (macOS 15 or later), with Codex on the same Mac. |
| Daydream | Removes bad takes, silences and filler words, finds b-roll, adds captions and switches between 16:9 and 9:16 | Local MCP server inside the Daydream desktop app, on Mac or Windows | The free plan allows 100 MCP tool calls a month. The server runs only while Daydream is open. |
| DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 | Analyzes projects, organizes media, adjusts settings and batch renders when you ask in plain language | Works with MCP-compatible AI assistants. Blackmagic names ChatGPT Codex among the assistants it supports. | Studio edition only, not the free version, and not on iPad. |
| ChatCut | Edits on a multi-track timeline by chat, with captions, motion graphics, AI voiceover and noise removal | Plugin for the ChatGPT desktop app, in Work and Codex | Free tier caps web exports at 60 minutes in total. Web and mobile ChatGPT can't install plugins. |
| Adobe | Makes a quick cut, a highlight reel or a resized version of a clip with Adobe tools | Plugin for ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex | Does not include every feature of each Adobe app. Some tools need an eligible paid Adobe plan. |
| invideo | Edits a timeline with cuts, titles and effects, and exports a video or an editable project | Hosted remote MCP server | Hosted, so it needs an invideo account. |
| Kapwing | Adds subtitles, translates captions and dubs audio, then downloads an exported MP4 | MCP, added as a custom connector | Pro, Business and Enterprise plans only. It cannot yet edit videos with multiple assets. |
| Shotstack | Composes and renders videos from an Edit JSON description with Shotstack's render API | Hosted MCP server. Shotstack lists the Codex CLI. | Built for developers: it renders from a description and uses assets at public URLs, not files on your Mac. |
Connect Codex to Woven Video
Woven Video is an AI video editor for Mac. Its connector is a local MCP server named woven that gives Codex 27 tools, and Woven does the editing and the rendering: Codex is told never to assemble or render video itself.
- One setup for Codex on your Mac. OpenAI's docs say the ChatGPT desktop app, the Codex CLI and the IDE extension share one MCP configuration, so a single setup covers them.
- Edits land live. Codex reads the reel and writes changes to it. If the reel is open in Woven, the edits land on its timeline as you watch, and if you and Codex change the same thing at once, your change wins.
- Cuts from what was said. Codex can transcribe speech with word timings, so you can ask it to cut silences and filler words or pull the best moments out of a long recording.
- Looks before it exports. Codex sees footage as still frames, never motion or sound. It can't export until it has rendered the current visuals, and exports from Codex are always 1080p. For 1440p, use the Export button in Woven.
- Credits. Editing, previews and export use no Woven credits. Generating media, captions and transcription use Woven credits. Codex is told to check with you before paid generation or transcription you didn't ask for, and to tell you what each one cost.
Paste the prompt where Codex runs on your Mac. That's Codex or Work mode in the ChatGPT desktop app, the Codex CLI (codex in Terminal) or the Codex IDE extension. It won't work in ChatGPT's chat, ChatGPT on the web or Codex cloud tasks. To add the connector by hand instead, run codex mcp add woven -- npx -y @woven-video/mcp, which needs Node.js.
Set up and make your first edit
- 1Copy the setup prompt. In Woven, open Settings, then AI apps, choose Codex (ChatGPT) and click Copy setup prompt. You can also copy it at the bottom of this page.
- 2Paste it into Codex. The prompt checks that you're on a Mac, asks before installing Woven with Homebrew, adds Woven as a local connector and opens Woven so you can sign in with Google. If the codex command isn't available, which can happen in the IDE extension, it adds Woven to Codex's config file instead.
- 3Restart Codex. In the ChatGPT desktop app, click Restart on Woven's screen, or quit the app and open it again. In the Codex CLI, start a new session. In the IDE extension, choose Restart extension.
- 4Ask for the edit. For example: import the clips in my Movies folder, cut a 30-second vertical edit with captions, then render a frame and check it. Watch the changes land on Woven's timeline, adjust by hand, and ask Codex for the export.
Needs macOS 15 or later and a signed-in Woven account with a plan or the 3-day free trial. Woven doesn't bill Codex's own usage.
FAQ
Partly. Codex can run FFmpeg or other installed tools on your computer to cut, join and convert files, and build videos from code with Remotion. It has no timeline or preview, so you check each result by playing the file. OpenAI's docs cover image input, not video.
The Codex CLI, the Codex IDE extension, and Codex or Work mode in the ChatGPT desktop app, on the Mac where Woven is installed. Woven's connector runs on your Mac, so it doesn't work from ChatGPT's chat, ChatGPT on the web or Codex cloud tasks.
For editing your own footage on a Mac, use Woven Video. It connects through an MCP server rather than a plugin, set up with one prompt, so it also works in the Codex IDE extension, where OpenAI's docs say plugins don't run. Adobe and ChatCut have plugins that work in Codex (ChatCut's runs in the ChatGPT desktop app), and DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 names ChatGPT Codex among the assistants it supports.
Run codex mcp add woven -- npx -y @woven-video/mcp in Terminal, which needs Node.js. Then restart Codex: start a new session in the CLI, choose Restart extension in the IDE extension, or quit and reopen the ChatGPT desktop app. The setup prompt connects Woven without Node.js and checks your install first.
It sees footage as still frames, one to six per call, and reads the transcript with word timings. It doesn't see motion or hear sound, so check the pacing and the music by playing the edit in Woven.
The connector needs a Woven plan or the 3-day free trial. Editing, previews and export use no Woven credits. Generating media, captions and transcription use Woven credits. Woven doesn't bill Codex's own usage.
Yes. Sign in with ChatGPT in Woven, and its own chat runs on Codex models from your paid ChatGPT plan (Plus, Pro, Business, Edu or Enterprise). Usage counts toward your plan's limits, and captions and generation still use Woven credits.
No. Woven is a Mac app for macOS 15 or later, and the setup prompt stops on any other system.
