What is a video editing MCP server?
Last updated 2026-10-20
The short answer
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard for connecting AI apps to outside tools and data, which its own docs compare to a USB-C port. A video editing MCP server exposes an editor's actions, such as importing clips or exporting, so an AI app like Claude Code or ChatGPT can run them for you. Editors that offer one today include Descript, DaVinci Resolve and Woven Video.
Which editors and tools offer one
Descript. Its help center describes an MCP that lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or another assistant that accepts a custom connector import media, edit with Underlord, organize projects and publish to a Descript web link. It uses your Descript login and connects to one Drive at a time.
DaVinci Resolve. Blackmagic's Resolve 21.1 announcement says Resolve supports integration with AI assistants such as Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex, to analyze projects, organize media, adjust settings and batch render. Its feature table says it requires an MCP-compatible AI assistant. Check that table for which edition includes it.
Adobe, including Premiere. Adobe for creativity is an MCP connector for Claude with 50+ tools across Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, Firefly, Premiere, Express, InDesign and Adobe Stock. It is one connector spanning many apps, with Premiere among them.
Shotstack. This cloud video API runs a hosted MCP server. An AI client describes a video as JSON, renders it and checks the render status, and a Studio view previews the result in the chat. It also lists tools for templates and for generating images, video and audio.
Woven Video. Covered next, because it runs differently: Woven's server starts on your Mac instead of living on a hosted address.
How Woven's connector works
Woven Video is an AI video editor for Mac. Its connector is a local stdio MCP server named woven. Your AI app starts it as a process on your Mac, and the app hands Woven the actual cutting and rendering instead of making video itself. The server offers 27 tools, which in plain words are:
- Find and read. List your workspaces and reels, make a workspace, list a folder, read a text file, read Woven's own guides and read a reel.
- Bring media in. Pull up to 300 files per call into a workspace from your home folder, iCloud Drive, cloud-storage folders, /Users/Shared or an external drive. It can also save a video from a link or fetch a public file.
- Inspect footage. Pull one to six stills from a video per call, get a transcript with word timings, extract an audio track or match a song.
- Edit and check. Write changes to a reel, render one to six stills of the result, list the bundled sound effects, open a reel in Woven and export an MP4 at 1080p. Export is refused until the current visuals have been rendered.
- Generate and caption. List the hosted media models, generate images, video clips and audio, check or cancel a job, make captions and fix caption words.
What it costs. Every tool except the guide reader needs a signed-in Woven account with a plan or the free trial. Five tools spend Woven credits: the three generators, captions and transcription. The caption word fixer and audio extraction cost nothing.
Set up Woven's connector
- 1Open the AI apps settings. In Woven, go to Settings, then AI apps, and pick Claude, Codex (ChatGPT) or Other app from the AI app list.
- 2Copy the prompt and paste it. Click Copy setup prompt and paste it into Claude Code or Codex on your Mac. The prompt confirms the computer is a Mac, asks your permission before a Homebrew install of Woven (it won't install Homebrew), registers the woven server and opens Woven for Google sign-in.
- 3Load the tools. Once Woven reports the connection, restart a desktop app, or open a new session in a terminal or IDE, so the new tools load.
- 4Start with a read-only request. Ask the app to list your Woven workspaces. When they come back, ask for a small edit to a reel open in Woven and watch it land on the timeline.
Requirements: macOS 15 or later, a Woven plan or the 3-day free trial, and an AI app that runs commands on your Mac. Pasting the prompt into a chat window or a cloud or web session won't work.
FAQ
Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard for connecting AI applications to external systems such as data sources, tools and workflows, and it is supported by clients including Claude, ChatGPT, Visual Studio Code and Cursor.
Blackmagic's Resolve 21.1 announcement names AI assistant integration with Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex, and its feature table lists an MCP-compatible requirement. There is also a community project on GitHub, davinci-resolve-mcp, whose README lists an individual as its author, not Blackmagic, so read the README of any such project before trusting it with your work.
Remotion's docs describe an MCP that gave coding agents access to its documentation, and they mark it deprecated in favor of agent skills. Those are installed with npx skills add remotion-dev/skills and guide agents such as Claude Code and Codex.
Yes. Descript has an MCP help page. Inside Descript, Settings, then Descript MCP shows the connect buttons and the server URL. On team or enterprise workspaces an admin may need to enable connectors first.
A local stdio server runs as a process on your computer, started by your AI app. A hosted server is reached at an address. Both Claude Code and Codex support both kinds. A local one needs an app that runs commands on your machine, which is why Woven's setup prompt won't run in a chat window.
No. A coding agent can run FFmpeg or write Remotion code with no editor involved. An MCP server is the route when you want an editor with a timeline to do the cutting and rendering.
