Can ChatGPT edit videos?
Last updated 2026-09-30
The short answer
Not on its own. ChatGPT can look at a video you upload and plan the edit (a cut list, caption text, a title), but it doesn't hand back an edited file. It also has no timeline and nothing to look at while you work: you can't see your clips laid out, preview your footage, or watch the edit come together. To actually edit with ChatGPT, connect it to a video editor. Woven Video is one: a Mac editor you sign into with your ChatGPT account, where you ask for the edit in chat and an AI agent makes it on a real timeline you can see and play back.
Your options
ChatGPT on its own. Upload a clip and ask for a timestamped cut list, captions and a title. It's good at structure, but there's no timeline or preview, so you make and check every cut yourself in another app.
Plugins and connected editors. Some video tools plug into ChatGPT, or let ChatGPT and Codex drive them, such as ChatCut, Adobe, DaVinci Resolve Studio and Descript. You usually finish the edit inside that tool.
Code. Developers can have Codex run tools like FFmpeg or Remotion to render a video from code. There's no visual timeline, so every change goes back through the agent.
An editor you sign into with ChatGPT. That's Woven Video, below.
Edit your videos with your ChatGPT plan in Woven Video
Woven Video is an AI video editor for Mac. Sign in with ChatGPT and the editor's AI runs on your existing plan. Any ChatGPT plan works, and usage counts toward your plan's limits.
- Ask for the edit. Describe what you want and the agent cuts your footage, adds captions, effects, music and sound effects.
- Fine-tune it by hand. Everything lands on a real multi-track timeline. Drag a cut, restyle a caption, or right-click any clip and choose "Reference in chat" to ask about that exact piece.
- Generate what's missing. Ask for an image, a video clip or a music track, and Woven creates it in your project.
- See everything. Every file in your project has a preview, you can play the edit back as you go, and projects are plain folders on your Mac.
- Start from something you like. Woven can break down a reference video's hook, pacing, shots and sound, pull a brand's logo and colors from a website, and clip a podcast into short videos.

How it works
- 1Import your footage into a Woven project.
- 2Ask for the edit in chat, for example: "Cut this to 30 seconds for Reels, add captions, and push in on the key line."
- 3Adjust anything on the timeline, by hand or by asking again.
- 4Export an MP4 for Reels, TikTok, Shorts or anywhere else.
Woven runs on macOS 15 or later. It has a 3-day free trial, then costs $99 a year. Captions and generation use Woven credits, and the trial includes $5 of credits.
FAQ
ChatGPT can plan an edit on any plan, including Free, but it won't return an edited file. For that you need an editor. Woven Video works with any ChatGPT plan and has a 3-day free trial.
Yes. ChatGPT accepts video uploads and can describe the clip and plan cuts, though it may miss parts of the video. It doesn't give you back an edited video.
Connect it to an editor first, such as Woven Video. Then describe the result rather than the steps: the length, the platform, what to keep, the caption style and one effect. For example: "Cut to 30 seconds, add captions and a title, and punch in on the key line." Check the draft and adjust by hand.
It can write the caption text, but adding captions to the video needs an editor. Woven Video generates captions from speech, and you can restyle any of them.
No. ChatGPT has no timeline or preview, so you can't see your clips laid out or watch the edit as it changes. In Woven Video every change lands on a timeline you can see, and you can play the edit back as you go.
Any plan works. Usage counts toward your ChatGPT plan's limits, and captions and generation use Woven credits.
With Sign in with ChatGPT, Woven uses the GPT models your ChatGPT plan offers. You can also use Woven-hosted models on credits.
