What is an AI video agent?

Last updated 2026-10-20

The short answer

An AI video agent is an AI system that takes a goal, such as "cut this to 30 seconds with captions", and works toward it step by step, using editing tools on a real project. It looks at the result of each step, fixes what is off, and asks you or reports back when it is done. A prompt-to-clip generator makes one pass and hands you a file.

Kinds of AI video agents

An agent inside an editor. The agent lives in the editing app, reads the project you have open and changes the timeline you are looking at, so you can fix any change by hand. Woven Video's own agent works this way.

A coding agent driving an editor. General agents such as Claude Code and Codex can run tools on your computer, including the MCP servers an editor exposes. The editor does the cutting and rendering while the agent decides what to ask for. Descript lists Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor as assistants that can connect, and Woven Video connects to Claude Code and Codex.

An agent that renders video from code. A coding agent can run FFmpeg, a command-line tool for converting and filtering media, or write a Remotion project, where the video is React code. Remotion publishes agent skills for Claude Code, Codex and Cursor. This suits promos and templated video. The edit lives in code, so you review it by rendering a file rather than by dragging clips.

What Woven's agent does

Woven Video is an AI video editor for Mac with an agent built in. You describe the result in chat, and the agent works on your reel one step at a time, on a timeline you can see and change.

  • It reads before it writes. The agent reads the reel as it stands, then writes its changes to it. With the reel open, you see each change arrive on the timeline.
  • It edits by chat. Cuts, captions, effects, music and sound effects become ordinary items on the Picture, Text, Effects, Captions, Audio and SFX tracks. Images, video clips and audio it generates land in your project, ready to place.
  • It checks its work with frames. The agent renders one to six stills of the finished reel at a time and looks at them before it presents. Stills can't show motion or sound, and its instructions say to admit that rather than guess. A connected app can't export until it has rendered the current visuals.
  • It waits for your yes. After it breaks down a reference video, it offers to build a reel from that breakdown and waits for you to agree instead of starting on its own.

The connector route. Already work in Claude Code or Codex? Woven also runs as a local connector for them. Paste Woven's setup prompt into either app on your Mac, and that agent drives Woven's tools while Woven does the editing and rendering. The prompt won't run in Claude's chat or in cloud or web sessions.

Try an agent on your own footage

  1. 1Download and sign in. Install Woven Video on a Mac running macOS 15 or later and sign in with Google. Both plans start with a 3-day free trial.
  2. 2Open a folder with a few clips. A Woven workspace is an ordinary folder on your Mac. Bring in footage you already have.
  3. 3Give a goal, then ask for proof. For example: build a 20-second vertical cut of the best moment, add captions and open on the strongest line. Then ask the agent to render a frame at each cut and tell you what it sees.
  4. 4Connect your own coding agent, if you use one. In Settings, open AI apps, choose Claude or Codex (ChatGPT) and click Copy setup prompt. Paste it into that app on your Mac.

Woven runs on Mac only. Captions, transcription and generation use Woven credits, and the agent sees your footage as still frames and a transcript, never as motion.
