Remotion vs an AI video editor: which should you use?

Last updated 2026-10-20

Remotion is a framework for writing videos as React code and rendering them to files such as MP4, which suits data-driven, templated videos and many variants. An AI video editor edits footage you already have on a timeline, by chat and by hand. Choose Remotion to generate videos from data, and an AI editor to finish your own recordings.

What Remotion is

Remotion is a framework for making videos with React. A video is treated as images that change over time. Your component reads the current frame number and draws what belongs on that frame, using components for text, images, video, audio and shapes. A composition pairs a React component with the video's width, height, duration in frames and frame rate.

You render a composition from Remotion Studio, from the command line, through a server-side rendering API, on AWS Lambda or inside a GitHub Action. The default codec is H.264, and Remotion's encoding page lists .mp4 among the containers it supports. Its site also describes agentic workflows, where a coding agent turns an idea into a video, and a Studio for drag-and-drop edits that save back to code.

Remotion licensing

Remotion states its terms on its license page and in its repository. Its license file defines two: a Free License and a Company License.

  • Free License. Covers individuals, for-profit organizations of up to 3 employees, non-profits, and anyone evaluating Remotion who is not yet using it commercially. Commercial use to create videos and images is allowed.
  • Company License. Needed by organizations outside that group, such as companies with more than 3 employees. It adds prioritized support.
  • Limits. You may not copy or modify Remotion in order to sell, rent, license or sublicense your own derivative.

What Remotion is good at

Remotion suits work where the structure repeats and the content changes. Input props are merged with a composition's defaults at render time, and data can also change the width, height, duration or frame rate. Pass different data and you get a different video.

What it asks of you is React and timing decided in code. Finding the best answer in a 20-minute recording by eye is not what a frame-by-frame component is for.

  • Data-driven video. Charts, stats or reports where the numbers come from a file or a service.
  • Templated video. One layout, many names, products or languages. Remotion's site lists 35 templates and examples.
  • Many variants. Remotion says you can render at large scale on your own infrastructure, and Remotion Lambda splits one render across many parallel Lambda functions.
  • Video inside an app. A Player lets you build video playback into your own product, and Remotion includes an Editor Starter with its Enterprise License.

Remotion vs an AI video editor

The question is where your video comes from. In Remotion it comes from code and data. In an AI video editor it comes from footage you recorded. The guide on what an AI video editor is gives the full definition.

Using both

They fit together. A Remotion render can be an MP4 that you bring into an editor next to your footage, such as an animated chart. In the other direction, a coding agent on your Mac can drive an editor through a connector instead of writing frame code, as the video editing MCP server page explains.

Edit your own footage in Woven

Woven is an AI video editor for Mac built around your recordings. You shape the cut in chat or on a multi-track timeline, and the app renders the result on your Mac. To let a coding agent on your Mac drive Woven, click Copy setup prompt under Settings, AI apps, and paste it into that app.

Ask in chat

  • Cut this recording down to the best two answers and add captions.
  • Put the product shot over the part where I mention it.
  • Fit the intro clip into 8 seconds.

Or do it by hand

  1. 1Start with the recording. Choose Add, then Video or Audio, and pick your file. Woven copies it into the workspace.
  2. 2Describe the cut. Tell the chat which parts to keep and in what order. The edit lands on the open timeline.
  3. 3Adjust by hand. Pull a clip's start or end to trim it. ⌘B splits at the playhead, and ⌫ removes the selected piece.
  4. 4Caption the speech. Select Generate captions from the + menu, then switch looks under Caption style.
  5. 5Export. Pick 1080p or 1440p from the Export menu. Woven saves the H.264 MP4 under exports in the workspace.
