AI video editors compared: features side by side

Last updated 2026-10-20

An AI video editor comparison comes down to a few checks: whether the tool edits your own footage or only generates, whether it has a timeline you can edit by hand, whether you can edit by chat or by transcript, and where it runs. The matrix below checks 12 editors against each vendor's own pages on October 20, 2026.

How to read the matrix

Each cell comes from the vendor's own website or help pages, opened on October 20, 2026. Not stated means the pages checked do not say, which is not the same as no. Features change often, so confirm anything that decides your choice.

Two ideas separate the tools. Some start from your footage and edit it. Others start from a prompt and generate, then give you an editor for the result. Many do both, so the footage column lists what each page describes.

This page carries no prices. The AI video editor pricing guide has plans, free tiers and credits.

Footage, timeline and editing style

Timeline means what the vendor states. Multi-track appears only where a page says so.

Captions, clipping, platforms and outside agents

The last column lists only what a vendor documents. An outside agent is an AI app that connects through MCP, a standard for giving AI apps tools, or through a developer API.

How to choose by job

Pick by the job, not by the longest feature list.

  • Long recording to short clips. Opus Clip, Submagic, Kapwing, Descript and Captions describe clip making, and VEED lists a clip generator. Woven does not find moments for you, so you or its agent pick them from a transcript.
  • Edit a talking head by text. Descript, VEED, Kapwing, Submagic and Premiere describe text-based editing, and Resolve lists it for Studio.
  • A whole video from a prompt. invideo AI, Captions, VEED and CapCut describe building a video from a prompt or a chat.
  • Your footage on a timeline you control. Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Resolve and Woven edit what you filmed. Woven adds a chat agent on the same timeline.
  • An outside AI app does the work. Descript, VEED, Kapwing, invideo AI, Opus Clip and Submagic document MCP, with different scopes: VEED's makes avatar videos, and Kapwing's cannot yet edit videos with several assets. Woven offers a local connector.
  • Where you work. Browser tools need no install. Final Cut Pro runs on Mac and iPad, and Woven is Mac only.

Where Woven fits

Woven Video needs macOS 15 or later. Its AI agent and your hands work on one multi-track timeline, with tracks for pictures, text, effects, captions, audio and sound effects. It edits your footage and can make images, clips and sound from a prompt. It does not cut by transcript on its own, find clips, or run on Windows, in a browser or offline, since sign-in, the chat agent, generation and transcription all go online. AI apps that run commands on your Mac can drive it through a local connector.
