How to use Veo 3.1 and edit what it makes
Last updated 2026-10-20
Veo 3.1 is Google DeepMind's video model. You can use it in Flow, Google AI Studio, the Gemini API or Vids by writing a prompt or adding images. Google's documentation lists 4, 6 or 8 second clips at 24 fps with generated sound. Veo makes clips only, so edit them together on a timeline.
What Veo 3.1 does and where you use it
Google DeepMind describes Veo 3.1 as a model that makes video with audio. It takes a text prompt, an image, or both, and generates sound effects, ambient noise and dialogue with the picture. Google lists these controls: reference images of a scene, character or object, first and last frame, scene extension, outpainting, adding or removing an object, and camera moves.
Google's Veo page names Gemini, Flow, Vids, Google AI Studio and the Gemini API as places to use it. One caution: Google's Gemini app page says Gemini Omni will replace Veo 3.1 there, so Flow, AI Studio and the API are the steadier routes. Google Cloud's documentation gives the specs below.

Free and paid ways to use Veo 3.1
Only in small amounts, and not everywhere. Google's Flow help page says everyone gets a daily allowance of Flow credits, with or without a subscription, and that the refresh starts with your first generation. Unused daily credits do not carry over. Without a subscription you may not be able to make video at peak hours, though you can still make images.
Veo 3.1 Fast costs fewer credits per generation than Veo 3.1 Quality, so the allowance goes further on Fast. In the Gemini API, Google's pricing page lists the free tier as not available for Veo 3.1, Veo 3.1 Fast and Veo 3.1 Lite, so API use is paid.
In Woven, Veo generation uses Woven credits. Rates per model are on the pricing page.
Plan around the 8-second limit
A Veo clip is 4, 6 or 8 seconds, and Google lists up to four videos per prompt. A 30-second video is therefore several clips, and the work is making them feel like one piece.
- Chain with frames. Use first and last frame so one clip ends where the next begins. Google lists this mode for both models.
- Match the look. Reuse the same reference images across prompts so the subject stays recognisable.
- Match the frame rate. Veo outputs 24 fps. Woven offers 24 among its frame rates, so set the project to match.
- Mind the 4K. Google lists 4K output for Veo 3.1. Woven exports at 1080p or 1440p, so a 4K clip is scaled down in the finished video.
- Check the ratio. Veo offers 9:16 and 16:9 only. For a square post, pick Square 1080x1080 under Format, then set the clip's Fit to Fill in the Crop tab and choose what shows.
What Veo does not edit
Veo's own editing tools change one clip: extend a scene, add or remove an object, move the camera. Google's pages do not describe joining clips, trimming the dead second at the start of each, captions, music under the dialogue or exporting for Reels. For those you need an editor.
Check the dialogue by ear too. Google's Veo page lists natural, consistent spoken audio, especially for short speech segments, as still in development, so play every line before you caption it.
Use Veo 3.1 inside Woven
Woven lists Veo 3.1 and Veo 3.1 Fast. Both show text-to-video, image-to-video and first-and-last-frame; only Veo 3.1 also shows reference-to-video. Ask in chat. Woven's AI agent lists the models, then generates in the background and saves the clip in your workspace's generated folder. Credits pay for it, and the pricing page has the rates.
Ask in chat
- Make a Veo 3.1 Fast test of a skateboarder landing a trick at sunset, vertical, eight seconds.
- Use this photo as the first frame and that one as the last frame, and generate it with Veo 3.1.
- Generate three Veo 3.1 shots for my product intro, then line them up after my hook clip.
Or do it by hand
- 1Ask in chat. Name Veo 3.1 or Veo 3.1 Fast, say whether you start from text, one photo, or a first and last photo, and describe the shot. Reference photos work with Veo 3.1 only.
- 2Match the frame rate. Clear the selection so the inspector shows Settings, then pick 24 under Frame rate.
- 3Bring the clips in. Choose Add, then Video, and select the files from the generated folder, or drag them onto the timeline.
- 4Join them. Put the clips on the same row, end to end. Click the marker between two clips to add a transition and pick a type, or leave a plain cut.
- 5Finish. Choose Add, then Generate captions for spoken lines. Use Volume if Veo's sound competes with music, then choose Export at 1080p or 1440p.
Common questions
Veo 3.1 is Google DeepMind's video generation model. It makes clips with native audio from text, images or both, and Google's documentation lists lengths of 4, 6 or 8 seconds.
Partly. Google's Flow help says everyone gets a daily allowance of Flow credits that does not carry over, while the Gemini API pricing page lists Veo 3.1 as not available on the free tier.
Veo can extend a scene, add or remove an object and change camera moves within one clip. Joining clips, captions, music and export need a timeline editor.
Google's Veo page describes editing controls for single clips and lists Flow among the places to use it. For a timeline with several clips, captions and music, use a video editor; Woven can generate Veo clips and then edit them.
Google lists 4K output for Veo 3.1 only; Fast tops out at 1080p. Flow's help also charges Fast fewer credits per generation. In Woven, only Veo 3.1 shows reference-to-video.
Google Cloud's documentation lists 4, 6 or 8 seconds, with reference-image generation limited to 8 seconds on Veo 3.1. Scene extension can lengthen a clip.
