What is creative fatigue? How to spot it and refresh an ad
Last updated 2026-10-20
Creative fatigue is what happens when an audience has seen the same ad too many times and responds less, so each result can cost more. The signs are frequency rising while early video views, clicks and results fall. The cheapest fix keeps the body of the ad and changes the opening: a new hook line, new captions or a new first shot.
What creative fatigue means
Creative fatigue is what happens when the same people see the same ad too many times. Meta's Business Help Center says people may be less likely to engage, which can lead to a higher cost per result. Ad fatigue is another name for it.
It is a problem with the ad, not proof that the offer is wrong, so a new opening is a fair first test. TikTok's creative guidance also favors refreshing: keep a steady supply of creatives to refresh, and add new ones to an existing ad group.
Meta counts all recent exposures of the same image or video, including those from other campaigns from your Page. One video running in three campaigns tires faster than any single campaign suggests. Its fatigue feature also covers only ad sets with one creative.
Signs an ad is tired
No single number proves it. Look for several signals moving the wrong way over the same days, and compare the ad with its own earlier weeks.
Meta warns you before launch if it expects fatigue in the first week. TikTok's Smart Creative pauses videos that show signs of fatigue within the first 3 to 5 days and queues replacements.
| Signal | What to look for | What the platform says |
|---|---|---|
| Frequency rises | Impressions per person keep climbing | Meta defines it as impressions divided by reach. If performance drops as frequency rises, the audience may be experiencing ad fatigue. |
| Cost per result rises | Each result costs more than for your earlier ads | Meta shows Creative limited when cost is above past ads but under twice as much, and Creative fatigue at twice as much or more. |
| Early views fall | Fewer impressions become 2-second or 6-second views | TikTok reports both. Dividing them by impressions gives hook rate, a marketer's term, not a platform metric. |
| Clicks and results fall | Click-through rate and conversions slide at steady spend | The Meta pages named here do not list click-through rate, but teams track it beside cost. |
The cheapest refresh: new opening, same body
Most of an ad's cost sits in the body: the demo, the proof, the offer. Viewers who have seen it decide in the opening seconds whether to stay, so replace that part. TikTok's creative blog recommends a hook, body and close structure and says 90% of ad recall impact is captured within the first six seconds.
One of Meta's recommendations is another ad with a new image or video that is materially different from the original. Nothing in the help pages we checked says a new hook line alone clears a fatigue status. So treat the first three rows as tests: publish each as a new ad, and move to the last row if cost does not recover.
Keep the tired ad running meanwhile. Meta notes that keeping the original active instead of pausing it may maximize results.
| Refresh | What changes | What stays |
|---|---|---|
| Swap the hook line | The first spoken or on-screen sentence | Footage, body and close |
| New captions or text | The opening words and their look | Footage and voice |
| New first shot | A different opening, such as the result before the demo | Everything after it |
| New creative | A materially different video | Only the offer |
How to run the test
Change one thing per variant, or you cannot tell which change helped. Run variants beside the original with the same audience and a comparable budget, and compare cost per result and early views once each has had enough impressions to move. On TikTok, add them to the existing ad group.
Make hook variants of one cut in Woven
Keep the body of your ad in one reel, change the opening by chat or by hand, and export each version as its own file. Woven charges nothing to caption audio it has already transcribed, so variants that share a voiceover add no transcription cost. Uploading stays with you, because Woven has no publishing to ad platforms.
Ask in chat
- Replace the first 3 seconds with the result shot from my b-roll folder, keep the rest and export.
- Change the opening text to 'Still editing by hand?' with a Pop entrance, then export a new version.
- Re-caption the cut in the Word by word look and export it.
Or do it by hand
- 1Find the opening. Find the frame where the hook ends, park the playhead there and press ⌘B. The opening becomes a separate clip.
- 2Swap the words. Double-click on-screen text to edit it, or choose Add, then Text. A new text box lasts 3 seconds.
- 3Swap the shot. Select the old opening and press ⌫. Delete leaves a gap, so drag the new first shot into it on the Picture track, then move later clips left if any space remains.
- 4Refresh the captions. If the voiceover changed, run Generate captions again from Add.
- 5Export each version. Choose Export, then 1080p. Woven adds a suffix instead of overwriting, so every variant keeps its own file.
Common questions
Creative fatigue is when an audience has seen the same ad too many times and responds less, which can raise the cost of each result. Ad fatigue is the common name for the same thing.
Look for rising frequency, rising cost per result and falling early video views over the same days. On Meta, the Delivery status reads Creative limited or Creative fatigue when the platform sees it too.
Neither help page we checked sets a fixed schedule. TikTok advises a steady supply of creatives to refresh, and Meta ties its advice to the fatigue status.
It can, and it is the cheapest thing to test, but no platform page we read promises it. Meta recommends a materially different creative, so test the new hook as a separate ad.
Meta notes that keeping the original ad active instead of pausing it may maximize results while you add a new one.
