How to turn a sermon into short videos
Last updated 2026-10-20
To turn a sermon into short videos, choose a passage of 30 to 90 seconds that makes sense with no context, trim it to start and end cleanly, and crop it to vertical. Add captions for viewers watching without sound, show the scripture reference as text, and clear the rights for any music, quoted text and people on camera before you post.
Choose a passage that stands alone
A sermon builds over half an hour or more, and a short cannot carry that build. Look for the stretch that does not need it: one idea, said in full, that a stranger could follow.
Listen to the candidate on its own. If you would be uneasy hearing it without the rest of the sermon, it is the wrong passage. Show the speaker the clip before it goes out.
- One thought. A single point, not three.
- Its own setup. The clip names the passage or situation itself, with no "as I said earlier".
- A landing. It ends on the sentence that completes the idea, not in the middle of an illustration.
- Faithfulness. Trimming should not change what the speaker meant. If it does, include more or choose another passage.
Length, captions and the scripture reference
Let the idea set the length. Thirty to ninety seconds is a sensible starting range, as advice and not a platform rule. YouTube Shorts allow up to three minutes for square or vertical video.
Captions matter here because some viewers watch with the sound off. Woven burns captions into the exported video, so they look the same wherever you post. Before you export, check proper names, the names of Bible books and any verse numbers the transcript may have misheard.
Add the scripture reference as text. Show the book, chapter and verse while the passage is mentioned, in a spot the captions do not cover. If you show the verse text itself, name the translation.
Music and permissions
Most sermon shorts do not need music, because the speaker's voice is the content. If you add some, keep it low and use only music you have the right to use in a video. Woven has no music library and does not check rights, so that responsibility is yours. If the recording includes a worship song, cut the short before or after it.
Ask first, and say where the clip will be posted. Be careful with counselling, prayer requests and children, and do not post them without clear consent. This is general guidance, not legal advice, so check each license and publisher page for current terms.
| What you use | Who to ask | What the source says |
|---|---|---|
| Songs and recordings | Your licensing provider or the rights holder | CCLI says its Streaming License covers authorized music in a church's online services, does not cover other copyrighted work, does not override a platform's terms, and may not prevent takedown notices on some social media sites. |
| Quoted scripture | The translation's publisher | Crossway says the ESV may be quoted verbatim in audio uses, including video and sermons, up to 500 verses, within set limits and with a copyright notice and a spoken credit to the ESV. Other translations set their own. |
| People on camera | Each person, and a parent or guardian for a child | YouTube's privacy guidance says a person must be uniquely identifiable in a video to file a complaint, and the uploader may be given time to remove or edit the content. |
Posting rhythm
Pick a rhythm you can keep for a season. One option is two or three shorts from each week's sermon, spread across the week so the message returns after Sunday.
Name the series or passage in each post and link the full sermon in the description or profile. Woven does not post or schedule for you, so you upload each short in the app where it will live.
Make sermon shorts in Woven
Woven is a Mac editor, so it suits church video editing on a laptop or a studio Mac: import the recording, find the passage, crop to vertical, caption it and export an MP4. It does not find passages for you, and its crop does not follow a speaker who walks the stage. Choose a crop for where they stand, and when they move, split the clip and crop the new piece. Woven's AI agent can transcribe the sermon and list where each thought ends, with times. Transcription uses Woven credits once per file. See pricing for credits.
Ask in chat
- Transcribe this sermon and list the passages where the pastor finishes a single thought, with times.
- Cut 18:40 to 19:50 into a vertical short with captions.
- Add Psalm 23:1 as text near the top for the first four seconds.
Or do it by hand
- 1Import. Bring the service recording in with Add, then Video. Dropping the file on the timeline also works.
- 2Go vertical. Make the canvas 9:16 with Format, then Vertical 1080x1920. The recording fills the frame with its sides cropped. If the speaker stands off-centre, ask in chat to frame them.
- 3Cut the passage. Split with ⌘B where the passage begins and again where it ends. Remove the parts on either side, and slide what is left to the beginning of the timeline.
- 4Caption it. Use Add, then Generate captions. With the captions selected, the Style tab's Caption style sets how they look.
- 5Add the reference. Choose Add, then Text, double-click it to type the reference, and drag it clear of the captions. A new text box lasts 3 seconds, so drag its end on the Text track to hold it longer.
Common questions
Choose a passage that stands alone, trim it, crop it to vertical, add captions and the scripture reference as text, then clear any music and people on camera before you post.
Long enough to finish one idea. Thirty to ninety seconds is a sensible starting range. YouTube allows Shorts of up to three minutes.
Only if you have the right to. Song rights are separate from the sermon. CCLI says its Streaming License does not override a platform's terms and may not prevent takedowns, so ask your provider about clips, or leave music out.
Usually, within the translation publisher's rules. Crossway allows ESV quotation in video and sermons up to 500 verses under stated limits, with a copyright notice and a spoken ESV credit. Check the publisher of the translation you use.
