How to add a glitch effect to a video

Last updated 2026-10-20

A glitch effect makes the picture look briefly broken: colors split apart, bands of the image slip sideways and the frame jumps. Use it as a hit of about 0.2 to 0.5 seconds on a hook, a beat or a cut, not as a constant filter. A VHS look is different: soft and faded. Woven has a Glitch effect plus glitch and tv-glitch transitions.

What a glitch or VHS look is

A glitch fakes a signal failure. The red, green and blue parts of the picture drift apart, strips of the frame shift sideways, and the image may jump for a few frames. Woven describes its Glitch effect as an RGB split with displaced bands.

A VHS look is a different thing. It is the worn-tape feel: soft detail, faded color and noise, held across a whole clip. A glitch is a moment. A VHS look is a mood. Decide which one you want before you build it, because they need different tools.

Woven has no VHS filter. For a rough retro mood, set a clip's color Preset to Faded and put Glitch hits on top. Treat that as a starting point, not a copy of tape. If you also want camcorder-style graphics on screen, Apple says some Final Cut Pro effects overlay camcorder or timecode graphics.

When a glitch fits, and how long to hold it

A glitch works when something should feel sudden: the first second of a hook, a hard beat, a jump between scenes, a tech or retro reveal. It fails when it decorates every cut. Pick two or three moments in a short video. Woven's AI agent is told to use effects sparingly for the same reason.

Use the table as a starting point, then trust your eye. If a viewer could describe the glitch afterwards, it lasted too long. Past a second it reads as a corrupted file, not a style.

Starting lengths for a glitch hit (rule of thumb)
UseLengthWhy
Hook, first second0.2 to 0.4 sStops the scroll without hiding the opening line
Beat hit0.1 to 0.3 sReads as part of the rhythm
Cut between scenes0.2 to 0.5 sCovers the jump
Retro or tech revealUp to 0.6 sRoom for a short build

Pair it with a glitch sound

A glitch with no sound feels thin. A short digital sound that starts on the first frame of the hit makes it land as an event. Keep the sound about as long as the hit, and trim it by dragging its edge if it runs long.

Woven's bundled sound effects include glitch-logo, which runs 0.6 seconds, and hit sounds such as bass-impact. Which one fits is your call. Beats are not detected for you, so find the beat by ear and park the playhead there before you add either one.

Glitch and your text

In Woven, effects never move or alter text and captions. During a glitch your captions stay readable and still. That is useful on a hook, where the words matter most. If you want the words to move as well, Woven's text Loop choices include Shake and Flicker.

Add a glitch in Woven

Woven has three glitch tools. The Glitch effect distorts the whole frame for a stretch of time, 0.4 seconds by default. The glitch and tv-glitch transitions sit between two clips, 0.30 seconds by default, and appear in lowercase. By hand you can change an effect's length. Its strength, from 0 to 1 with a default of 0.6, is set in chat. Only one effect is active at a time, and the latest start wins, so put a glitch and a flash one after the other.

Ask in chat

  • Add a glitch on the first half second of the video.
  • Put a tv-glitch transition between clip 2 and clip 3.
  • Make the glitch at 0:04 stronger.
  • Add a glitch sound under every glitch.

Or do it by hand

  1. 1Place the effect. Park the playhead on the beat, choose Add, then Video Effects, and click the + on the Glitch card. Dragging the card onto the timeline works too.
  2. 2Trim the hit. Drag the edges of the effect on the Effects track. The default 0.4 seconds suits a hook.
  3. 3Layer the sound. With the playhead on the same frame, choose Add, then Sound Effects, search for glitch and click +. It lands on the SFX row at 45% volume.
  4. 4Or use a transition. Click the marker between two clips on the same row, pick glitch or tv-glitch, and use − and + to set the length.
  5. 5Check the hit. Press Space to watch it at full speed. If the hit is too harsh, ask in chat for a lower intensity.
